They asked Kafka, in an interview

by Kelp

They asked Kafka, in an interview, once
Why his view of the world was so bleak.
He laughed.

“You should interview my neighbor’s dog,” he said.
“Too busy (or too lazy) to take him for a proper walk,
My neighbor lets the dog out in the yard,
In the cold, in the snow.
Immediately the dog yelps and yaps.
He does not stop. He does not let up.
Until he’s let back into the house.
By my busy, lazy neighbor.”

Pinching his nose, he said quite seriously:
“Ask the dog why his view of the world is so bleak.”
